Star Lake Musicamp 2008 Highlights

2008 Special Guests

David Daws

David Daws is currently Young People's Band Leader at the Hendon Corps in Hendon, England.  He has served as principal cornet of the Hendon Band, as well as having served as principal cornet and cornet soloist of the Enfield Citadel Band.

He commenced playing the cornet at the age of three under the guidance of Maisie Wiggins (who now teaches David's daughters, Stephanie and Isobel).  David has spent his entire life within The Salvation Army and his first band was the Wealdstone Junior Band, under their leader John Yates, who now resides in Canada.

A liftetime's ambition was achieved in 1981 when he joined the International Staff Band and nearly 20 years of service together followed experiencing numerous highlights and opportunities.  David served as principal cornet and cornet soloist in the Staff Band for nearly 10 years. He has played his cornet throughout the world as well as on many radio and CD recordings.

Malcolm Randell

Malcolm Randell is currently the Young People's Band Leader at the Boscombe Corps in Bournemouth, UK. He grew up at the nearby Winton Corps in Bournemouth, where he taught young people in the YP Band and met and married his wife, Claire.

During the late 1990's, Malcolm and Claire transferred to the Boscombe Corps, and Malcolm became the YP Band Leader in the spring of 2001. In addition to his involvement with the YP Band, Malcolm plays Tenor Horn in the Boscombe Corps Band. He holds the unique distinction of having played in every section of the senior band (including percussion) during his tenure with the band.

Malcolm has arranged various pieces of music to suit the current YP Band's needs, including mambo, film scores, ragtime, classical, swing, choral and TV themes. The year 2008 is very significant for this YP Band, as it is the band's centenary and the original music group represents the first officially commissioned YP Band in The Salvation Army, dated 1908. The band's most musically renowned 'export' is internationally known euphonium soloist Stephen Mead, with whom they will be performing in their centenary year.

Malcolm lives in Bournemouth with Claire and their children Oscar and Emily. He is a Senior Lecturer in Interior Design at Bournemouth University, in addition to practicing architecture and interior design within his own design consultancy. As for hobbies, he enjoys riding his motorcycle and blowing his trombone - occasionally at the same time!
